Introduction

Dalit is a non-governmental, non-partisan and non-profit organization established in 1998 by a group of young dalit people working for the development of the dalit and other vulnerable and socially excluded groups so that they can meet their basic needs. Dalit promotes human dignity for the communities who are deprived of their fundamental basic rights declared in the Bengali Constitution and the UN Declaration of Universal Human Rights. In 1999 it got recognition from the NGO Affairs Bureau and it started its programs in a more organic way. In 2010 it got the registration from the Ministry of Social Welfare.

“Dalit” is a Bengali word that literally means “someone trampled under the feet of someone else”. It is used to identify an outcast minority of oppressed, exploited and deprived people. The founders and visionary-dreamers of Dalit NGO are some young educated people belonging to the Dalit community, who was inspired by the autobiography of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar.
