About Us

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND

“Dalit” is a Bengali word which literally means “someone trampled under the feet of someone else”. It is used to identify an outcast minority of oppressed, exploited and deprived people. From 1998 our organization took the name DALIT to give representation to Dalit and untouchable communities and in 1999 it was registered under the NGO Affairs Bureau. The founders and visionary-dreamers of DALIT NGO are some young educated people belonging to the Dalit community, who were inspired by the autobiography of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar. Their dream was to fight for self-respect, dignity and human rights and, after conducting a study within the selected Dalit communities, they discovered the following reasons of underdevelopment:

  1. Scarce education, especially among women
  2. Lack of awareness about personal hygiene
  3. Unemployment and low-income jobs
  4. Lack of access in basic primary health
  5. Superstition and oppression by the higher castes
  6. Discrimination against women
  7. Women and child abuse, polygamy, child marriage
  8. Bad transportation system

After identifying the problems Dalit team started its activity to help the communities meeting up its needs with an integrated and holistic approach.
